iPhone with Face ID and in-screen Touch ID could arrive in 2021

The Touch ID on the Apple iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

We've seen in-screen fingerprint sensors on some Android phones in the past few months, but it could be a year or two before we see a similar feature on the iPhone.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that Apple will release an iPhone in 2021 with Face ID and an in-screen Touch ID fingerprint sensor. The next 18 months will see Apple resolve the technical issues and deliver an optimal experience on the iPhone.

Kuo believes Apple will use a variant of Qualcomm's ultrasonic fingerprint under-display system, which enables the user to place a finger on a large section of the display to be scanned.

This isn't the first time we are hearing reports about an in-screen Touch ID coming to the iPhone. Credit Suisse reported last month that screen suppliers are "actively developing full screens" without notches at the top for Apple, which suggests that Face ID could be ditched in favor of an in-screen Touch ID. Apple has also filed patents for Touch ID under the display.
