iPhone 8 to have wireless charging, but you may have to buy the wireless charger

Reports of the next iPhone supporting wireless charging have been circulating for some time and KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that it will indeed be coming.

Kuo states that the next iPhone, also known as the 2017 iPhone or iPhone 8, can be charged wirelessly on an inductive pad similar to the way we charge the Apple Watch. Due to the use of a glass casing, the next iPhone may be able to charge faster as there is minimal disruption from frequency interference.

There's a catch though; it is not known whether all models will support wireless charging or whether Apple will bundle the wireless charger in the retail box. It is likely to be limited to the higher-end model while users of the other models may have to buy the wireless charger.

Apple is also said to be pursuing wireless charging aggressively through 2018. It has filed patents for wireless charging up to 1 meter. Earlier in May, Apple is believed to have hired two engineers with an expertise in wireless charging from uBeam

Two months ago, VentureBeat stumbled upon certification testing documents mentioning Energous' WattUp reference design undergoing compliance testing at Apple. The mention of Apple in the documents suggests that the iPhone maker could be evaluating the technology for use in its devices. Nikkei also reported that Foxconn is currently testing wireless charging modules for use in the next iPhone.
