iPhone 12 might have a hidden reverse wireless charging feature
Long story short, VentureBeat’s Jeremy Horwitz has found Apple’s recent FCC filing for WPT (wireless power transfer) devices and it includes this following detail (via MacRumors):
In addition to being able to be charged by a desktop WPT charger (puck), 2020 iPhones also support WPT charging function at 360 kHz to charge accessories. Currently the only accessory that can be charged by iPhones is an external potential apple accessory in future.
In English, that means two things. One, which we already knew, is that the iPhone 12 supports wireless charging and itself can be charged by a desktop charger.
Two, which is what’s entirely new to us, is that the iPhone 12 also supports wireless charging of other devices.
As to why Apple didn’t reveal this detail during the iPhone 12 announcement, the filing already gave us the answer: only one Apple accessory can be charged by the phone and that accessory isn’t ready yet. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman posits that this accessory is the next generation of AirPods (with a case that sticks to the back of the iPhone via MagSafe, maybe?), which he says are coming next year.
We shall see.
