iOS 12.2 hints at new iPads and iPod Touch

Developer Steven Troughton-Smith has discovered references to four new iPad models in iOS 12.2.

The models, named iPad 11,1 to 11,4, refers to both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi and cellular models. These model numbers currently do not correspond to any known iPad.

Apple has long been rumored to be working on a successor to the iPad Mini 4 and this could be it. Troughton-Smith also said that these new iPads won't have Face ID, which would make sense since the iPad Mini has always been positioned as the affordable iPad.

Perhaps what's most interesting is the reference to a new iPod Touch device called iPod 9,1. The last iPod Touch was introduced way back in July 2015 but Apple never said that it would be discontinued. If true, it will be intriguing to see what features the new iPod Touch will have.

Many believe that Apple will announce new iPads sometime in March this year. They announced a new 9.7-inch iPad with Apple Pencil support in March last year.
