According to reports, Intel's revived contract chip manufacturing business has its first major customer and it is Taiwanese chip designer MediaTek.

MediaTek is mostly known for designing chips that power mid-range Android phones. However, the company also designs chips for tablets, Chromebooks, networking products such as routers, IoT and smart home devices, and even cars.

Most recently, the company unveiled its Dimensity 9000+ chipset that would appear on flagship-class Android phones.

Headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan, MediaTek is reportedly the fourth largest fabless chip designer in 2021, behind Broadcom, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm, but ahead of AMD. The company's revenue last year was US$17.6 billion.

Up until now, MediaTek has relied heavily on TSMC for manufacturing its chip. Its deal with Intel will allow it to diversify its production and give it a more balanced supply chain.

And as for Intel, this move to manufacture chips for others is part of the company's new IDM 2.0 strategy where it will help develop and manufacture x86, ARM, and RISC-V chips for other companies to diversify its business through its Intel Foundry Services (IFS) arm.
