Early Tiger Lake tests suggest Intel's new Xe graphics is the bee's knees

Tiger Lake is Intel's big push for mobile processors and it's coming to a bunch of notebooks this holiday season.

It's still a 10nm chip but it's built using Intel's new third-generation SuperFin process that Intel claims will deliver gains in performance that's comparable to a full node transition.

More importantly perhaps is the introduction of the company's new Xe integrated graphics. Intel made big claims during the launch presentation, boasting it will outperform both AMD's existing Ryzen 7 4800U processor and NVIDIA's GeForce MX350 discrete GPU.

A couple of sites have just posted early test results and they are promising.

The Verge reported that it got its Tiger Lake reference notebook, powered by the flagship 28W Core i7-1185G7, to rack up an average of 89fps in Overwatch running at Full-HD at Ultra settings. In the same test, AMD's Ryzen 7 4800U could only manage 46fps.

Over at Tom's Hardware, they clocked a similar reference notebook at 77.5fps in Grand Theft Auto V running at Full-HD at Normal settings. In the same test, the Ryzen 7 4800U managed 67.6fps while a system powered by the Ice Lake Core i7-1065G7 could only do 40.6fps.

While Tiger Lake's graphics performance looks promising, CPU performance was a bit of a mixed bag. AMD's Ryzen 7 4800U still pulled ahead in Geekbench 5, and it was also faster in video-encoding tests.
