Intel just announced its next generation 5G modem, the XMM 8160.

The XMM 8160 is a multimode modem designed to provide 5G connectivity for a wide range of devices including phones, PCs and broadband access gateways.

With support of peak speeds up to 6 gigabits per seconds, the Intel XMM 8160 modem is three to six times faster than the latest LTE modems in the market today.

Intel claims that the XMM 8160 5G modem is designed to scale with worldwide carrier support, broad platform certification and broad OEM support. It is expected to ship in the second half of 2019 and commercial devices equipped with the XMM 8160 5G modem will be available in the first half of 2020.

An earlier report by Fast Company states that the first 5G iPhone is likely to arrive in 2020. However, the 2020 iPhone lineup is said to be using the XMM 8161 5G modem.
