Intel Launches Xeon E7 v2 Processor Family, Takes Aim at Real-Time Data Analytics

Intel has launched its new Xeon E7 v2 processor series that is positioned to meet the enterprise computing requirements for real-time data analytics. In addition, the company also highlighted their ongoing engineering collaboration with SAP on its data analytics platform, HANA.

The Xeon E7 v2 ‘Ivy Bridge-EX’ processor family boasts of increased memory support, with up to 1.5TB of memory available for each CPU socket. This translates to 6TB of system memory in a four-socket platform, and up to 12TB for an eight-socket one. This is to ensure that during in-memory data processing, large amounts of data can be delivered to the Xeon E7 v2 processor, with reduced latency to increase the speed of data analysis. Another improvement made to the new Xeon chips is the support for PCIe Gen 3.0 bus standard with the aim to reduce I/O bottlenecks. Other features include support for Intel Sure Run technology for system reliability, and hardware-embedded security to safeguard data integrity.

Besides presenting the new processors, Intel also roped in SAP to enhance the ecosystem of the new hardware. In particular, SAP’s data analytics platform HANA has been optimized to operate on the new Xeon E7 v2-based hardware systems. According to SAP, the HANA system is an in-memory computing platform that "accelerates analytics, business processes, sentiment data processing, and predictive capabilities."

The SAP CIO for Asia Pacific and Japan, Mr. Manik Saha, was on hand to share the benefits of SAP HANA, even for the man on the street. With speedier responses for IT systems leveraging on SAP HANA, it translates to better user experiences as decisions and actions can be made almost instantaneously. From traffic control to F1 racing cars, its application is far-reaching; the benefits of real-time data processing and analysis from disparate sources include more streamlined workflows for increased productivity, as well as reduced waiting times.

Mr. Prakash Mallya, Country Manager for Intel Singapore and Malaysia, also chimed in about the government-driven big data initiatives for our local shores. Intel is working with some government bodies to develop “usage models” for data analytics. When confirmed, these usage models will be released to both public and private bodies, with the common aim of building a smart and secure urban planning model for Singapore.
