Intel announces its third generation 5G Mobile Trial Platform (MTP), and the updated platform will begin support for new radio (NR) specifications in live tests and trials with partners in Q4 2017. The new MTP solution will be powered by Intel FPGAs and Intel Core processors. With such “high performance reprogrammable and software driven processors”, the company can implement the latest access mode and communication protocols quickly. Such flexibility will allow Intel to update the MTP as the specifications for 5G networks are finalized soon.

According to Intel, its importance is highlighted in the following points:-

  • Lab to Standard: We co-develop alongside the NR standard giving the industry a working solution on track with finalization.
  • Interworking: We can test network-device NR interoperability sooner, giving us learnings to feed into technology development.
  • Time to market: Operators can test real-world NR trials earlier, giving them insight into how to prepare for commercial deployments. Ecosystem: We feed results back to the standards bodies to achieve final specs faster.
  • Insight: Plow learnings back into our technology, allowing us to shorten the path to fully interoperable silicon solutions helping the industry meet ambitious targets to deploy commercial 5G services before 2020.

In February this year, Intel, along with key industry players that include AT&T, NTT DOCOMO, SK Telecom, Vodafone, and Ericsson, banded together to establish a Non-Standalone (NSA) 5G NR specification. This move will enable 3GPP-based large-scale trials and deployments as early as 2019. According to Intel, the final standalone 5G NR specification is slated to be completed by September 2018. 5G NR is the wireless standard for 5G networks, and it will scale efficiently to meet the demands for key adoptions by service providers.
