Intel Announces Galileo Development Board, First Quark SoC-Based Product
Intel has just announced the Galileo development board. This Quark SoC-based board is the first product from the company's new collaboration with Arduino. Arduino is a leading open-source hardware platform manufacturer for the hobbyist and education communities.
The Intel Galileo board features the Quark SoC X1000; this single core, single-thread chip is rated to operate at 400MHz, and is based on the Pentium instruction set architecture (ISA). The development board functions on a Linux-based operating system, with Arduino software libraries. However, the board can be programmed from Windows, Mac OS, and Linux host operating systems, as the Arduino software development environment is supported on them.
Besides the ease of developing programs, the Galileo board comes with a host of hardware features like a 10/100 Ethernet port, USB 2.0 connectivity, a mini PCIe header, and an option to attach microSD storage of up to 32GB capacity. The Galileo is also compatible with most existing Arduino hardware kits, and it marks Intel's continued push into the hobbyist community. In August this year, Intel unveiled the Atom-based Minnowboard that jointly developed by the Intel Open Source Technology Center and Circuitco, with the primary aim of introducing the Intel x86 architecture to the embedded systems community.
