Instagram just announced a short-form video feature to take on TikTok.

Officially known as Reels, it allows users to record and edit 15-second multi-clip videos with audio, effects, and new creative tools. Reels can be recorded in a series of clips (one at a time), all at once, or using video uploads from the phone's gallery.

The new feature can be accessed at the bottom of the Instagram camera and there are several creative editiong tools on the left side of the screen to personalise the reel. The tools include:

  • Audio: search for a song from the Instagram music collection or record an original audio.
  • AR effects: select one of the many effects in Instagram gallery which are created by the company and creators all over the world.
  • Timer and countdown: set a timer to record the clip hands-free.
  • Align: helps to line up objects from previous clip before recording the next one to create seamless transitions
  • Speed: speed up or slow down part of the video or audio

Instagram users with a public account can share their Reels to a dedicated space in Explore or post to their Feed to share with their followers. Instagram users with a private account can only share their Reels with their followers. Reels can also be shared to Story, close friends or in a direct message even if Instagram users have a private account.

Reels is being rolled out to Instagram users in 50 countries from today.
