During festive seasons, you may be at your wits ends for gift ideas. You may want to go for curated products like Ban Leong’s IT hampers, or you may look to IBM Watson Trend for its predictive analytics of popular products. The IBM Watson Trend service leverages on the compute capabilities of IBM Watson to reveal what consumers are buying and the reasons behind their purchases. It does so by looking at social networks, blogs, forums, comments, ratings, reviews, which are all sources of unstructured data. The IBM Watson supercomputing platform will make use of machine learning and natural language processing to identify patterns and trends. With its capabilities of scrutinizing the nuances of natural language, IBM Watson is touted to be able to interpret that understanding into recommendations.

At the same time, the IBM Watson doesn’t rest on its laurels as it continues to “absorb” new knowledge at a rate that’s humanly impossible. If you are concerned about this seemingly frivolous application of the IBM Watson platform, fret not as IBM has bigger plans for Watson as the “insights” gathered from shopping trends can be applied to other aspects of our modern society. Head over to IBM Watson Trend to check out trending products, and read about their comments. There’s also a chart that tracks the popularity of the product on an empirical scale and based on the “chatter” the product generates online, the Trend app attempts to perform trend analysis, with a margin of error.

You can download the iOS version of IBM Watson Trend for more end consumer insights on retail gifts. There isn’t an Android version yet so for non-iOS devices users, you are limited to the web version for now. The Apple Watch is the most popular gift item on IBM Watson Trend. This isn’t the first time IBM Watson has been put to good use; on the medical front, the supercomputing platform offers WatsonPaths and Watson EMR Assistant. Locally, we reported early last year DBS was using the Watson Engagement Advisor to deliver better customer services based on their banking needs.
