Huawei will still release security and software updates for its Android phones

Huawei's existing Android phones will continue to be supported with security and software updates.

In response to a Nova 5T user on Twitter, Huawei confirmed that the expiration of the temporary general license has no impact on existing devices. It will continue to issue security and software updates to Android devices.

The Washington Post reported three days ago that Huawei phones may not be able to get future Android updates as the temporary general license had expired. A Google spokesman declined to comment whether the company will continue to send the updates. It is likely that these software updates will be rolled out through the Android Open Source Project as Google cannot issue them directly.

The U.S government imposed tighter restrictions on Huawei to ban the Chinese company from buying alternative mobile chipsets that are "developed or produced from U.S software or technology to the same degree as comparable U.S chips".
