Huawei’s new Honor 8 comes with P9’s dual-rear camera setup

If you thought the Huawei P9 was a little too expensive for your liking, there’s a more affordable alternative with its unique dual-rear camera setup making its rounds in the US right now - Huawei just unveiled the Honor 8 in the US earlier today.

While the Honor 8 is Huawei Honor’s top-of-the-line phone, the Huawei P9 still remains as the current flagship device. Huawei said that the phone is targeted at millennials, and it comes packed with many photo-taking related tweaks and the ease of single-hand use. The 5.2-inch phone lets you snap selfies with a voice-activated “Cheese” or exploit its Wide Aperture mode that lets the user adjust the focal point of the camera to achieve their desired bokeh (blurred background effect).

The Honor 8 features two 12-megapixel rear cameras. They work in a manner similar to the Huawei P9’s dual rear cameras – one shoots in standard RGB, and the other captures the same scene in monochrome, and the resulting image is a combination of both cameras. According to The Verge, the Honor 8 doesn’t feature the Leica branding on the phone despite the similar configuration.

The phone also comes with a “smart key” feature on its fingerprint sensor. Users can set it up to open specifics apps or take certain actions after repeated or long presses.

Hardware-wise, the Honor 8 uses a HiSilicon Kirin 950 SoC. The phone has to compete with other affordable smartphones like the Xiaomi Mi 5 and ZTE Axon 7. Other specs include a Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels resolution) display, 32GB or 64GB internal storage (expandable with microSD card), 4GB RAM, and a 3,000mAh battery. The Honor 8 uses a USB Type-C charging port that supports fast-charge. It runs Android OS 6.0.1 (Marshmallow).

The Honor 8 pre-orders are ongoing for the US market, and Huawei expects to ship them out to the US folks by the end of August 2016. It’s currently going for US$399.99 (~S$536.20). Currently, there’s no news about the phone coming to Singapore.
