Huawei races ahead of Samsung to launch first 5G phone in Singapore

While pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S20 series are ongoing, Huawei decided to race ahead of its Korean rival and launch Singapore’s first 5G smartphone

The Mate 30 Pro 5G comes with a new design that features a premium vegan leather back (which was previously not available locally). It is also powered by the world’s first flagship 5G SoC, the Kirin 990 5G which is said to deliver almost 20% improvement in power efficiency.

Priced at S$1,498, the Mate 30 Pro 5G is available from 29 February at all Huawei Concept Stores, selected consumer electronics stores and online official stores (Lazada and Shopee).

To recap, its star feature is low light photography, which it seems to excel. It's also generally a good phone and boasts a great battery life as we've found in our review of the non-5G edition that's currently available.

As is to be expected, it uses Huawei's Mobile Services (HMS) and does not come with Google Mobile Services (GMS). However, the HMS core is still based on Android and thus almost all existing Android apps do work on Huawei HMS-powered devices like the Mate 30 Pro. The only exception is apps that rely specifically on certain GMS services might not function, but that's why Huawei is busy working with app vendors to offers HMS-friendly editions that can be downloaded from Huawei's AppGallery (their equivalent of the Play Store). Meanwhile, there are alternative methods like running these relevant services from the phone's browser and we've got a quick step-by-step on how that's done painlessly:-

Launch Offer

There is a launch roadshow at Bedok Mall, B2 Atrium on 29 February where every purchase of the Mate 30 Pro 5G comes with an exclusive gift bundle worth $619. The gift bundle includes Huawei FreeBuds Lite (worth $188), Huawei 27W SuperCharge Wireless Charger (worth $78), Huawei Phone Cover (worth $48), Huawei 27W SuperCharge Wireless Car Charger (worth $98) and a 4-in-1 gift box (Bluetooth speaker and earbuds) from Best Denki (worth $207).
