HMD Global reboots the Nokia smartphone story with the Nokia 6, Nokia 5, and Nokia 3

HMD Global reboots the Nokia smartphone story with the Nokia 6, Nokia 5, and Nokia 3

In addition to the relaunch of the iconic Nokia 3310, Finnish company HMD Global (which owns the Nokia brand) has today also unveiled the Nokia 6, Nokia 5, and Nokia 3 smartphones. All three phones run “pure” Android (which means they’ll be updated frequently, be it OS updates or monthly security updates) and support the Google Assistant.

Nokia 6

Launched in China early this year, the just-announced Nokia 6 is basically the global edition of the same phone. Machined with a single solid block of 6000 series aluminum, the Nokia 6 sports a 5.5-inch full HD IPS display (protected by 2.5D Gorilla Glass) and a home button-embedded fingerprint scanner. It’s powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 octa-core SoC with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage (supports expandable storage via a microSD card slot), and packs a 3,000mAh battery.

Camera-wise, the Nokia 6 sports a 16-megapixel, F2.0 primary camera that supports phase-detect autofocus and dual-tone flash, and an 8MP, F2.0 front-facing selfie camera with AF. It also touts a smart audio amplifier with dual speakers for better sound quality and Dolby Atmos support. Micro-USB (USB 2.0) connectivity and 3.5mm headphone are still present.

Available in four colors – matte black, silver, tempered blue, and copper – the Nokia 6 will retail at €229 (~S$340). There’s also an Arte Black limited version going for €299 (~S$444). Besides its gloss black finish, the Arte Black edition comes with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. The Nokia 6 is available as both single SIM and dual-SIM variants.

Nokia 5

Simply put, the Nokia 5 is a smaller (pared-down?) Nokia 6. Like the 6, it’s made from a single block of 6000 series aluminum; and you won’t find any antenna lines at the back because they are moved to the top and bottom of the phone.

Like the Nokia 6, it’s powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 430 SoC and runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat, though it only has 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage. If the latter isn’t enough, you can expand it with a microSD card. For the display, you get a 5.2-inch 720p IPS panel, once again protected by 2.5D Gorilla Glass.

Camera-wise, the Nokia 5 sports a 13MP, F2.0 rear camera that supports phase-detect AF and dual-tone flash, and the same 8MP, F2.0 front-facing selfie camera as the Nokia 6. The phone also has a smart amplifier, but it only has one speaker and doesn’t do Dolby Atmos.

Also available in matte black, silver, tempered blue, and copper color options, the Nokia 5 will retail at an average global retail price of €189 (~S$280). The Nokia 5 is available as both single SIM and dual-SIM variants.

Nokia 3

The most entry-level smartphone in the group, the Nokia 3 sports an aluminum frame and has Gorilla Glass laminated to its 5-inch HD IPS display.

Unlike the Nokia 6 and 5, the Nokia 3 uses a MediaTek SoC (MTK 6737), with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage (expandable with microSD card). It also packs an 8MP, F2.0 front camera and an 8MP, F2.0 front selfie camera (both with AF). The phone will run Android 7.0 out of the box.

Available in silver white, matte black, tempered blue, and copper white, the Nokia 3 will retail at an average global retail price of €139 (~S$206). Like its sibings, it's available as both single SIM and dual-SIM variants.

The made-by-Foxconn Nokia 6, 5, and 3 are slated to hit retail in 2Q 2017.

Lastly, for what it's worth, the rumored Nokia 8 isn't part of the announcement. Rumor has it that it'd come with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 processor. Maybe this phone would be announced after the Galaxy S8, which is said to be hoarding the supply of this chip.
