HKT and Huawei Launch World's First Seamless VoLTE Service in Hong Kong

Hong Kong telco HKT, in partnership with Huawei, today launched the world's first seamless VoLTE (Voice over LTE) service utilizing the latest VoLTE 3GPP standard Release 10 technology. The service is only available with Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 LTE smartphone and is Hong Kong's first commercial VoLTE service.

The launch is notable for being the first in the world to utilize the latest 3GPP standard Release 10 VoLTE technology, which is the first to enable totally seamless handover of voice calls from 4G to 3G coverage. The service also promises higher quality video and clearer sound, with significantly reduced background noise, enhanced video call quality, and instant switching between voice and video calls.

Locally, VoLTE services should soon start appearing. Starhub was the first Singaporean telco to successfully complete a VoLTE call, back in December 2013, and a service launch is planned for later this year. SingTel has also announced its partnership with Ericsson and Samsung to launch VoLTE services in the coming months. M1 has also indicated that VoLTE services will be coming this year.
