Hitachi GST Announces 1TB Per Platter Hard Drives

Hitachi GST has announced their first 3.5-inch hard drive featuring 1TB of storage capacity per platter. Seagate was the first in line to reach this milestone early this year in May.

"The areal density race continues and while having the highest capacity is appealing, reaching 1TB per platter is equally important as it serves a full range of applications and opportunities across the industry’s largest market volume," said Brendan Collins, vice president of product marketing at Hitachi GST.

This new technology will reach consumers as members of the Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.D and 5K1000.B drive family. It is also offered as single-platter models in the Hitachi Cinemastar series. The Deskstar drives feature Hitachi's HiVERT technology, which reduces power consumption while the drive is idle. The Cinemastar series has features and technologies optimized for A/V streaming and it best suited for use in consumer electronics devices like media players, DVRs and video surveillance systems for homes.
