High-end AirPods, over-ear headphones and new HomePod rumored to launch in 2019

High-end AirPods, over-ear headphones and new HomePod rumored to launch in 2019

Following up on its March report about new AirPods arriving later this year, Bloomberg just revealed more information on Apple's 2019 lineup of audio accessories and products.

People familiar with Apple's plans told Bloomberg that higher-end AirPods, a new HomePod smart speaker and studio-quality over-ear headphones will be launched as early as next year.

The higher-end AirPods will come with noise cancellation and water resistance, and Apple is said to be trying to increase the range that AirPods can work away from the iPhone/iPad. The new AirPods will cost more than the current S$238 AirPods, which could be part of Apple's strategy to segment the product line like the iPhone. Future AirPods could also come with biometric sensors such as a heart-rate monitor.

Bloomberg also states that Apple will be launching over-ear headphones to compete with Bose and Sennheiser. They will be positioned as higher-end alternatives to the existing Beats lineup. While former KGI Securities analyst Ming Chi-Kuo claimed that a pair of "high-end over-ear " headphones will launch at the end of the year, Bloomberg said the plan has changed due to development challenges.

Not much information is shared on the next generation HomePod smart speaker, but Apple has reportedly switched production away from Inventec and diverted some orders to Foxconn.
