The entertainment business is ever so fickle. A mere three weeks after announcing that he will be returning as Superman, Henry Cavill is being shown the door.

The abrupt change follows on the heels of the British actor's departure from Netflix's hit The Witcher series. While Cavill never said that he was leaving The Witcher to play Superman again, the timing of the announcements had fans thinking that he had quit the Netflix series to return to DC, only to be given the boot.

The latest announcement came on his Instagram page, where he spoke of meeting with DC Studios' new co-chairman and CEO James Gunn and Peter Safran. "I will, after all, not be returning as Superman," he said. "After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn't the easiest, but that's life."

"The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build."

Instead, Gunn will be taking Superman in a new direction, focusing on the superhero's formative years. This will reportedly involve his years as Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent, with some sources saying that Gunn could both write and direct the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

That said, the Guardians of the Galaxy director has not completely ruled out Cavill's involvement in future projects. “We just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future,” Gunn said on Twitter

Big changes are roiling DC, following Gunn and Safran's joining. They are expected to reboot DC movies and TV, as the company works through its merger with Discovery.
