Another Avenger is joining the team.

Developer Crystal Dynamics just hosted its second War Table livestream, which dropped a lot of new information for Marvel’s Avengers. The stream showed off content for the game’s upcoming beta and revealed its first post-launch hero: Hawkeye!

Watch the trailer:

The purple-suited archer will join the Avengers after the game’s launch as a fully playable character, with his own campaign storyline. Crystal Dynamics also confirmed that the campaign is fully playable in either solo or co-op gameplay, so you’ll be able to take a couple friends along for the ride.

We don’t see much actual gameplay for the character, which makes sense considering that Hawkeye won’t be available at launch. However, the trailer showcases a mix of melee and archery-based combat - which is likely what we’ll get. Black Widow also takes care to mention shock arrows at the end of the trailer, which is very much in line with Hawkeye’s huge arsenal of weird trick arrows. If we don’t get to fire net arrows, what was all this even for?

Excitingly, Crystal Dynamics mentioned that they drew inspiration from Matt Fraction and David Aja’s Hawkeye comicbook run. It’s an iconic story for the character, cementing his role as a down-on-his-luck superhero who has to try extra hard just to keep up with the Avengers. It also introduces Kate Bishop, a second Hawkeye taken under his wing. If the barking at the end of the trailer is any indication, we might see her and their dog Lucky during the campaign.

The rest of the War Table stream focused on the massive open beta, which features a wealth of free content for players to try out before the game’s launch. Players will get to play as each of the Avengers, minus Captain America and Thor in different types of game missions. Find more information on the open beta period here and its content here.
