Since last year, Google’s search engine has been steadily churning out AI-produced summaries for your search results. Now, Google thinks it can be better with new and refined features.

First launched in May 2024, AI Overviews is an information card that sits at the top of your search queries, summarising details pertaining to your search term. Besides ensuring it didn’t give nonsense responses, access to AI Overviews was gradually rolled out of the U.S. to more countries and territories over the months.

In a recent blog post, Google said it is implementing Gemini 2.0 for AI Overviews seen in the U.S. This came shortly after Gemini 2.0 was released to the public.

Google said Gemini 2.0 can help Google Search users work with harder questions, coding, advanced math, and other multimodal queries (the latter refers to input and output that’s not strictly text-based). However, Google did not give any examples of how the new AI Overviews performed better than the current one we have.

Experimental feature, AI Mode

A new experimental mode, AI Mode, is also coming along with Gemini 2.0 in Google Search. It's found in Google Labs. To quote Google:

"What makes this experience unique is that it brings together advanced model capabilities with Google’s best-in-class information systems, and it’s built right into Search. You can not only access high-quality web content, but also tap into fresh, real-time sources like the Knowledge Graph, info about the real world, and shopping data for billions of products." -- The Keyword (Google's Blog).

Functionally, it is similar to ChatGPT/DeepSeek. However, instead of giving weird responses and outdated information, AI Mode pulls real-time, up-to-date data from Google Search by forwarding summaries and web links as its AI responses. In addition to its relevancy, it is also multimodal and supports follow-up questions.

At the time of publishing, there are no details on when AI Overviews with Gemini 2.0 will be released in the U.S. or if AI Mode will be released from beta. We’ll update you if more information surfaces.
