Google said to have lower sales expectations for the Pixel 5 phone
As Google prepares to officially unveil the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G later, sources told Nikkei Asian Review that the company has lowered the sales expectations of the flagship phone.
The sources claim that Google plans to manufacture less than one million Pixel 5 phones this year. Production is said to be as low as 800,000 units. The more conservative outlook is believed to be driven by the Covid-19 pandemic. Google only managed to ship 1.5 million phones in the first half of this year, a huge drop from the 4.1 million phones shipped over the same period in 2019.
The coronavirus outbreak also reportedly disrupted Google's diversification plan to make new phones in Vietnam from this year. The Pixel 4a is currently being produced in Vietnam and the Pixel 5 is still manufactured in Shenzhen. Nonetheless, the sources cautioned that production volume can change according to market response.
