Google rumoured to be working on a Nest-branded streaming dongle
Google is said to be working on a new streaming dongle that will come under the Nest brand.
Several sources with knowledge of the plans told Protocol that the new streaming dongle looks like the current Chromecast dongles, but will work more like the Roku or Fire TV stick.
The new streaming dongle is expected to come with a full-fledged TV interface and its own remote control. The new user interface will put a greater emphasis on individual movies and TV shows. Users can also install apps from the Play Store and will integrate with Google Assistant for voice control. In addition, it is likely to support Google's Stadia cloud gaming service.
To keep in line with its recent efforts to transform Nest into the brand for its smart home and entertainment devices, Google is considering to brand the new streaming dongle as a Nest product.
Google is expected to launch the new streaming dongle in summer, although plans could change due to supply chain disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The new dongle is said to be priced around or below US$80.
