Providing panoramic views of many streets in the world using images taken from specially adapted cars (or tricycles if the areas are not accessible by car), Google Street View has always been a highlight of Google's information-gathering and logistical prowess. In July 2011, Google started an initiative to archive the devastation inflicted on Japan by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

The 360-degree panoramic images of the disaster-struck areas are now available for viewing via the Street View feature in Google Maps, as well as via a special website called "Build the Memory", where visitors can compare the before and after shots of the towns that have been ravaged by the natural disaster.

Google hopes that this digital archive will be useful to researchers and scientists who study the effects of natural disasters, as well as provide insight into the plight of the Japanese people who have suffered from the earthquake and tsunami.
