At Google I/O, Google finally showed off its first foldable phone. It's called the Pixel Fold and it will go on sale next month at a whopping price of US$1,799 (~S$2,387).

It's undoubtedly very expensive and for you get a phone with a large 7.6-inch foldable display. This display is OLED and has a 120Hz refresh rate and a resolution of 2208 x 1840 pixels.

When the Pixel Fold is folded, you can use the additional 5.8-inch display on the front. This display is also OLED and also has a fast 120Hz refresh rate. Its resolution is 1080 x 2092 pixels.

This setup offers a lot of flexibility since it means you can either use it as a normal phone (albeit a pretty thick one) with a 5.8-inch display or as a small tablet.

When folded, the Pixel Fold is 12.1mm thick. That's about the same as a very thin notebook. The weight is 283g, which is pretty hefty for a phone. To give that number some context, the iPhone 14 Pro Max which has a heavy stainless steel chassis is 240g.

The hinge is stainless steel and can withstand up to 200,000 open and close cycles. It can hold its position at any point. The phone has an IPX8 weather resistance rating, which means it can withstand exposure to water but not excessive dust.

Inside, the phone is powered by Google's Tensor 2 processor – the same chip that powers the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro. This is paired with 12GB of memory and you can opt for either 256GB or 512GB of storage. There's no memory card slot to expand storage.

The battery capacity is 4,800mAh which Google claims can offer "beyond 24 hours" of battery life. Maximum charging rate is 30W over a USB-C connection. The Pixel Fold supports wireless charging too.

As for cameras, there are five. There are three on back and this includes a 48-megapixel optically-stabilised main camera, a 10.8-megapixel ultrawide, and a 10.8-megapixel 5x telephoto. There's a 10.8-megapixel camera on the outside for selfies and another one above the inner folding display for video calls.
