Google Pixel 9 might come with a life-saving feature

The Google Pixel 8 lineup is equipped with the Samsung Exynos 5300 modem and lacks support for satellite connectivity.

The Google Pixel 9 might feature a life-saving feature similar to the Apple iPhone 14 and iPhone 15: satellite connectivity.

A Google insider told Android Authority the Pixel 9 series would continue to use a non-Qualcomm modem, in particular the new Samsung Exynos Modem 5400. While no information was shared about the new modem, we can safely assume it is likely to deliver better performance and power efficiency than the older Exynos Modem 5300.

Due to support of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) in the Exynos Modem 5400, the Pixel 9 series could be the first to support Android's native satellite connectivity feature.

Google has been preparing to launch a built-in satellite messaging feature for Android 15 in collaboration with T-Mobile. There is also a dedicated "Satellite Gateway" app to communicate with emergency services.

However, code within the Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2 release suggests that Android's native satellite connectivity feature will only be available in certain areas and requires satellite messaging to be added to the mobile plan.

Google might showcase the satellite connectivity feature at I/O 2024 next month.
