Google launches Nearby Share feature on Android
After years of development, Google finally launched the Android version of AirDrop, Nearby Share.
Nearby Share allows direct sharing of files, photos, links and other content between any device running Android 6.0 and above. Pixel phones and Samsung phones will be getting Nearby Share from today while other Android devices will receive the update in the coming weeks. Nearby Share will also be coming to Chromebooks in the next few months.
For Nearby Share to work, you need to enable Bluetooth and Location services. Both Android devices also need to be in close proximity. Android users can set "Device visibility" to determine who can "see" them and share content with. Users can choose to be visible to all, to some contacts or stay hidden.
When a user wants to send something, Nearby Share will appear as an option in the default Android share menu. Upon clicking on Nearby Share, it will start searching for nearby devices and the user can select a contact to send the content. The other user who is on the receiving end has to accept or reject the file transfer.
