Google I/O developer conference is back in May as a virtual event

Registration is now open for Google I/O 2021.

After a year’s hiatus due to Covid -19 concerns, Google is bringing back their Google I/O developer conference for 2021.

A registration site from Google and a tweet from Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai say that where attendees had to pay for previous I/O events, this year’s virtual event will be held from May 18-20 is entirely free.

The last physical event in 2019 actually featured a Singaporean company BandLab and their app.

Past events also saw the unveiling of new software and hardware like Google Assistant, new Pixel phones, Pixel Buds, and Android OS upgrades. Given the lack of an event last year, it will be interesting to see what is in store for us next month.

While the full schedule will only be available from the end of April, we know that there will be online Consumer and Developer Keynotes, Technical Sessions, Workshops and Ask Me Anything Sessions (AMAs), Meetups, Interactive Sandboxes, and Codelabs and Learning Pathways.

Google stresses that there will be no physical, in-person Google I/O events in 2021, various Google Developer Groups around the world may host their own local or community-hosted meet ups.
