Google introduces developer preview of Android P with support for display notch
Weeks after Bloomberg reported that the next Android OS will copy the "notch design" of the iPhone X, Google today unveiled the first developer preview of Android P with support for the display cutout.
According to Google's support document on Android P, the cutout support will work seamlessly for apps with the system managing status bar height to separate content from the cutout. The new window layout attribute can allow an app to lay out its content around the device's cutouts.
The display cutout support should be useful as there is an ongoing trend among Android phone makers to release smartphones with the familiar iPhone X's notch design. For example, ASUS copied the iPhone X's signature notch for its ZenFone 5 smartphone although it claims to have a notch that is 26% smaller.
Other new features in Android P include indoor positioning with Wi-Fi RTT, improved messaging notifications, multi-camera API for phones with dual camera modules and to create innovative features (e.g. zoom, bokeh), HDR VP9 video, HEIF image compression, Neural Networks API 1.1, Open Mobile API for NFC payments and secure transactions and improved power efficiency.
