Google confirms there will be no Pixel Watch this year
Despite rumors of Google releasing a Pixel-branded smartwatch this year, the company has officially confirmed that that's not the case.
In an interview with Tom's Guide, Miles Barr, who is Google's director of engineering for Wear OS, confirmed that the company has no plans to release a smartwatch this year.
“To think of a one-size-fits-all watch, I don’t think we’re there yet,” Barr said. “Our focus is on our partners for now.”
Barr said Google will focus on improving WearOS and working with smartwatch makers which include Fossil and Casio. He hinted that the ideal Pixel Watch would follow the same strategy as the Pixel line of smartphones where Google Assistant, AI and machine learning are the key features.
“Our Google Pixel line of phones is the best experience and Google’s take on it, so I imagine we would focus heavily on the [Google] Assistant to integrate AI and machine learning into the device, which is Google’s forte,” Barr said.
