Chrome will soon block ads that take up too much resources
Google has just announced that its Chrome browser will soon block resource-heavy ads.
These include ads that mine cryptocurrency, poorly programmed ads, or simple ads that are not optimised for network and battery usage.
Google says that such ads drain battery, saturate networks, and are therefore cost money.
There are three thresholds that Chrome will look at in determining whether an ad is resource-heavy:
- if it consumes more than 4MB of network data
- 15 seconds of CPU usage in any 30-second period
- or 60 seconds of total CPU usage
If Chrome detects such an ad, an error message will be displayed in the ad's frame.
Google says this feature will be introduced in a Chrome update sometime in late August.
