Google Assistant is finally available on local LG ThinQ AI TVs

After a long wait, the Google Assistant feature on LG’s ThinQ AI TVs (be it OLED or Super UHD sets) is finally ready for local use after a software update.

Users can now use voice commands to access and search for information as well as check weather forecasts, all while enjoying their favorite TV shows. They can search for specific content by making a verbal request through the TV’s remote control, such as “show me romantic comedy movies on Netflix” or “show me yoga videos”. They can also get help to manage daily tasks by scheduling calendar events, or pull out specific photo albums in their Google Drive gallery to share and reminisce with friends and family.

More than that, users can even request for food, retail and hangout recommendations. Details such as the contact information and address of the newest restaurant openings, or highly rated F&B establishments are now at their fingertips.

Google Assistant was a much talked about feature when LG released its TVs last year. However, this integration is region specific, and has never worked for local sets until now. The various LG folks I’ve spoken to last year all told me that the TVs are basically Assistant-ready, and they’re just waiting for Google to officially enable Assistant support on them. It seems like the localization work is finally done and Google has now given the green light.
