Google is apparently working on a 5G-capable Pixel 4a

Pixel 4 and 4 XL.

According to 9to5Google, Google is working on a 5G-capable Pixel 4a. This and a reference to Pixel 5 were found after the site’s Dylan Roussel dug into the code of the latest beta version of the Google Search app.

For some context, 9to5Google has been tracking two codenames — redfin and bramble — for a while now, which are believed to be the 2020 Pixel 5 and 5 XL respectively. However, in Roussel’s find, instead of the Pixel 5 XL, bramble is listed as the Pixel 4a (5G).

What does all this mean?

Well, the most straightforward answer is that Google has decided not to launch a Pixel 5 XL this year. And since the Pixel 4a keeps getting delayed, Google may be canning it too in favour of the 5G variant. If that’s the case, we may have two Pixel phones this year using the same SoC — Snapdragon 765G.

Of course, another possible scenario is that there would be four Pixel phones this year: Pixel 5, Pixel 5 XL, Pixel 4a (5G) — all running Snapdragon 765G — and a low-end Pixel 4a running the Snapdragon 730. But that seems a bit too much and confusing, no?
