Google and Facebook to allow employees to work from home till the end of 2020

Most Facebook and Google employees will continue to work from home until the end of the year.

A Facebook spokeswoman confirmed with CNBC that CEO Mark Zuckerberg will make an announcement soon. She added that the company allows employees who can do their work from home to continue to do so. Most offices are planned to reopen on 6 July. Facebook is still assessing which employees will have to come in.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai told employees during an all hands-meeting that employees are likely to be working from home till the end of the year. For employees who need to return to office, they can do so in June or July with certain safety measures in place.

Besides being among the first companies to implement the work-from-home policy, Facebook and Google have been contributing to the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Facebook has been making sure everyone has access to accurate information while removing harmful content and banning ads for medical masks, hand sanitisers, disinfecting wipes and Covid-19 test kits. Facebook is also matching donations to support Covid-19 relief efforts and donated $25 million to support healthcare workers on the front line.

Google is working with Apple to launch a solution that includes APIs and OS-level technology to assist in contact tracing.
