Google pushes ahead with AI Overviews by bringing to six more countries

The AI-powered tool is getting more functionality across more platforms and going to more places. Hopefully, without telling more people about the culinary ingenuity of adding glue to pizza. #google #gemini #artificialintelligence

In a recent update, Google shared that its making AI Overviews more powerful and accessible by adding more features and bringing it to more countries.

During its launch earlier this year, this AI-powered search tool was rolled out only to the United States, and it was ridiculed for a minority of unusual responses to uncommon queries, like adding glue to pizza sauce. Understandably (and hopefully), Google has since worked on refining the quality of its AI Overviews feature.

In its latest update, Google said more people are asking longer questions and going deeper into topics, which is a boon to publishers, businesses, and content creators. To that end they’ve added the following tools to AI Overviews.

Now, AI Overviews get site icons (favicons) on desktop and mobile formats. This allows the user to check the source of the information more easily, and jump straight to a website relevant to their queries.

Google also added Direct URLs within AI Overview’s texts, on top of existing displayed links, to show where it has gotten its answers from. Google said early trials of this have shown more traffic going to publisher sites.

In addition to these confirmed upgrades, Google also added two more experimental tools for AI Overviews. You can choose to enable them by going into Search Labs and opting into the trial (if it’s available in your country).

The first trial is the ability to “save” specific AI Overviews for future reference. This also stores the info and links during your search binge. Saved AI Overviews can be recalled when you use the same search phrase or when you go to your profile’s Interest page. Currently, this feature only works in English.

Second, there is the option to simplify the language used in AI Overviews. It’s also available in English only at the moment and is helpful if you are researching topics outside of your expertise or if you’re trying to explain something to someone less capable.

AI Overview in six more countries

Google is also making AI Overview available in six more territories: the United Kingdom (UK), India, Japan, Indonesia, Mexico, and Brazil, along with local language support in each country.
