The iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max have a flat edge that harks back to the iPhone 4 — but unlikely the older iPhone, the new band is oh so shiny.

In our iPhone 12 Pro review, we noted that this polished band is a mega fingerprint magnet and it’s something echoed in many other reviews. But the jury is still out on how it handles scratches.

According to TechCruch’s Matthew Panzarino, though, not all iPhone 12 Pros are finished the same way. The gold model, in particular, uses a different coating method.

Matthew Panzarino, in his review (emphasis mine):

Most of the iPhone 12 Pro finishes still use a physical vapor deposition process for edge coating. But the new gold (which I do not have in person but looks great) uses a special high-power, impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) process that lays down the coating in a super dense pattern, allowing it to be tough and super bright with a molecular structure that mimics the stainless steel underneath — making it more durable than “standard” PVD. One side effect is that it’s easier to wipe clean and takes on less fingerprints, something that my blue model was, uh, definitely prone to.

It’s hard to really know how this extra durability plays out in real life. On paper, a PVD process that uses the HIPIMS technique can result in a higher hardness ratio than your typical PVD, but is the PVD method used by Apple on the other iPhone 12 Pros conventional in the first place?
