Global smartphone sales are up for the first time in months thanks to these two brands

The latest figures from Gartner show a slight increase in global smartphones sales in Q1 2018 compared to the same period last year. This comes after the first decline in smartphone sales for the first time in nine years at the end of last year.

But the growth in sales wasn't due to the latest flagship devices like the Samsung Galaxy S9, instead most of the growth came primarily from two companies: Huawei and Xiaomi, both of which benefited from aggressive pricing in the entry-level and mid-tier segment.

Huawei achieved 18.3 percent growth in Q1 2018, helping it cement its place as the world's number three smartphone vendor, but it was Xiaomi that was the clear winner, with an incredible 124 percent growth year on year.
