2020 is a record year for global app spending according to preliminary Sensor Tower Store Intelligence estimates.

Global spending on apps and games crossed $100 billion in a single year for the first time in November. On Christmas alone, consumers spent about $407.6 million on Apple's App Store and Google's Play Store. This translates to a 34.5% year-over-year growth from $303 million in 2019.

The bulk of the holiday spending was on mobile games; Tencent's Honor of Kings led the pack with $10.7 million in consumer spending, which is a whopping increase of 205.7% from 2019.

Outside of mobile games, entertainment generated the most revenue on both app stores. TikTok was the top app in consumer spending as it generated $4.7 million revenue globally on Christmas.

As expected, Apple' App Store captured the majority of the app spending with 68.4% or $278.6 million, up 35.2% from 2019. Google Play garnered $129 million in revenue, an increase of more than 33% from the previous year.
