The latest research from Strategy Analytics indicates a record quarter for 5G phone shipments.

Global 5G phone shipments spiked 458% to a record 133.9 million units in Q1 2021 compared to 24 million a year ago. Strategy Analytics believes the huge demand in China, the Apple iPhone 12 lineup, and affordable Android 5G models helped to boost shipments.

Estimates suggest that Apple shipped a record 40.4 million iPhone 12 units  in Q1 2021, making it the clear leader in the global 5G phone market with 30% share. The iPhone 12 is believed to be very popular across China, Europe and the U.S, which Apple confirmed during a recent earnings call.

Chinese phone makers Oppo and Vivo are ahead of Samsung with a market share of 16.1%, 14.5% and 12.7% respectively. Oppo and Vivo capitalised on the collapse of Huawei in the global market to capture more market share. Xiaomi rounded out the top five with a 12% market share.

It is no surprise that the iPhone 12 lineup was a hit among consumers. Counterpoint Research's monthly Market Pulse Service claimed that the iPhone 12 was the best-selling 5G phone in October and four of the top 10 best-selling phones in January 2021 belonged to the iPhone 12 lineup.
