Gigabyte has announced that it has expanded its selection of Thunderbolt 3-certified boards to include three more boards from its Intel Z170 Gaming series of motherboards.

The new Thunderbolt 3 boards include the flagship Gigabyte Z170X Gaming G1 and the Gaming GT and Gaming 7 motherboards. Unlike the Z170X-UD5 TH which was reportedly the first Thunderbolt 3-certified board, the three new boards are targeted at gamers and enthusiasts who demand more performance-oriented features.

Users that wish to upgrade their motherboard can download the firmware update utility under the “Utility” section on the respective product pages. After updating the firmware, Thunderbolt 3 support will be enabled on the motherboards.

The new Thunderbolt 3 specification uses the USB Type-C connector, which the boards already have. Thunderbolt 3 supports DisplayPort 1.2 over the USB Type-C connection and up to 40Gbps of theoretical bandwidth, which means it can drive a 4K display at up to 60fps and allows users to daisy-chain up to six devices from the single USB Type-C port.
