When this movie comes out, it will be shiny and chrome.

It looks like George Miller’s long-gestating next Mad Max movie is finally in the works! During an interview with the New York Times, Miller stated that he was currently working on a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, which will focus on Furiosa.

The character was played by Charlize Theron in the movie, but it doesn’t look like she will return to reprise the role. Miller is intent on finding a younger actress to play Furiosa and auditions are already underway, with The Witch and Emma’s Anya Taylor-Joy is rumoured to be in the running

Apparently, Miller considered using de-aging technology to have Theron play a younger Furiosa. Martin Scorsese made it work for The Irishman after all, but the director decided that the technology just wasn’t there yet. He specifically complimented Japanese game developers, saying, “Everyone is on the verge of solving it, particular Japanese video-game designers, but there’s still a pretty wide valley, I believe.”

This news comes on the five-year anniversary of Miller’s masterpiece, Mad Max: Fury Road - widely regarded as one of the best action movies of all time. Currently, the director has been forced to pause production on his next movie, Three Thousand Years of Longing, due to the ongoing pandemic. Reportedly, he’s looking to get to work on the Furiosa movie once that project finishes filming.

Fury Road cinematographer John Seale is also set to come out of retirement for Furiosa, as well as production designer Colin Gibson. Gibson stated that 135 vehicles were built for the production of Fury Road, and, “The next possible iteration, which is on the table, has even more.”

Reportedly, Furiosa will explore the titular character’s life in the ‘Green Place’, before she was forced to work for the villainous Immortan Joe. The concept of Miller returning to the Mad Max franchise is hugely exciting - and who knows? He might even find a way to top his 2015 masterpiece.
