For those who aren't fond of puns (specifically those related to cats), viewer discretion is advised when reading the following article.

Just kidding. Bonus points if you like cats, though.

With the rise of platforms such as the Epic Store and Apple Arcade, we've seen an exponential surge of indie games and developers onto the scene in recent months, and while Singapore isn't exactly known for churning out triple-AAA titles, there are quite a few gaming gems originating from our little red dot.

One of these standout titles is Cat Quest, and it has a sequel called Cat Quest II. They're both open world adventure games developed by local game studio The Gentlebros, and as of this month, the franchise has topped over 1.3 million downloads worldwide and generated almost S$5.2 million in earnings for the three-man team. As the titles suggest, the games are centred around animal adventurers as they travel across the land to save the cat kingdom from evil villains. It's light-hearted, amusing and full of animal-related puns, such as aptly-named Catpital and Lupus Kingdom. Well...we did warn you about the puns.

And before you ask, no. There aren't any prizes for guessing what animal the citizens of that latter country look like.

Anyway, hitting such a big global milestone is definitely cause for celebration, and The Gentlebros co-founder Desmond Wong said he was "beyond thrilled that Cat Quest has broken into international markets this successfully". However, the festivities won't just end with the team giving themselves a pat on the back and popping open a bottle of champagne - no, they're going to pass it on to their players too, and in two different ways, no less.

The first aspect is collectibles, and the studio has teamed up with Mighty Jaxx to produce a line of limited-edition Cat Quest merchandise. It's apparently a capsule collection, and the models will take inspiration from the series' most iconic characters. Unfortunately, that's about all that The Gentlebros are willing to tell us at this point in time, but we'll keep you posted on any further updates.

The second aspect hits a little closer to home, and I mean it literally. On the eve of National Day (Aug 8), to celebrate both the game's third anniversary and International Cat Day, The Gentlebros will be pushing out a HUGE update for Cat Quest II titled "The Mew World". It's completely free of charge - the studio is releasing it as a thank you note to their loyal fans who've "made this success pawsible". It's reportedly their biggest release this year, and will add tons of gameplay and brand-new loot for players to collect. Plus, if you happen to have an Apple Arcade subscription, you'll be getting first dibs on the update too, and if you don't, well...go get one - seven bucks a month is a pretty nice deal.

Cat Quest II is currently available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and mobile via the Apple Arcade.
