Update (7th August 2017): Garmin launches trendier color choices for Fenix 5S that's targeted at the fashionable and active women. Here are the colors.

Garmin's latest range of Fenix multi-sport smartwatches.

First seen at CES 2017, the Garmin Fenix 5 series smartwatches have made their way to Singapore. These are hardcore, multi-sport tracking smartwatches that cater to a variety of exercise profiles.

Garmin Fenix 5.

The Garmin Fenix 5 range comes in three iterations – the slimmest Fenix 5S with a battery life of up to 9 days in smartwatch mode, up to 14 hours in GPS mode, and up to 40 hours in UltraTrac battery saver mode. The moderately-sized Fenix 5 with up to 2 weeks in smartwatch mode, up to 24 hours in GPS mode, and up to 75 hours in UltraTrac battery saver mode. Finally, the hefty Fenix 5X has up to 12 days in smartwatch mode, up to 20 hours in GPS mode, and up to 50 hours in UltraTrac battery saver mode.

Built-in navigational features included are a 3-axis compass, a barometric altimeter, on top of the GPS and GLONASS support mentioned earlier. The smartwatches have daily tracking capabilities, as well as tracking for running, hiking, swimming, and biking.

When paired to a smartphone, the Fenix 5 watches can get notifications for calls, texts, and apps. Watch face customization can be done via their proprietary online store (Garmin Connect IQ). The sapphire crystal lens versions of the watches are enabled with Wi-Fi support, allowing them to use home networks for updates. Otherwise, it operates on BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy).

Core upgrades from preceding Fenix 3 smartwatch

The New Garmin Fenix 5 series now offer different sizes to cater to differently-sized persons. The bigger Fenix 5 watches have a slightly higher display resolution quality, and the new watches pack new training effects, a built-in gyroscope, new heart-rate monitoring technology, “more” bike sensor support, and a series of all-around upgrades. The watches use a stainless steel bezel, furnished with steel buttons and rear case. This allows the new watches to be worn as dress watches, with the appropriate interchangeable band.

Main differences between all Fenix 5 smartwatches

The three types of Fenix 5 watches come with different diameters – Fenix 5S at 42mm, Fenix 5 at 47mm, and Fenix 5X at 51mm. They support 20mm, 22mm, and 26mm QuickFit watch bands respectively. Fenix 5S’s display is 1.1-inch wide (218 x 218 pixels resolution), while 240 x 240 pixels resolution displays can be found on the 1.2-inch Fenix 5 and Fenix 5X.

Features-wise, the Fenix 5X has preloaded street, cycling, and topographical maps of SEA countries, along with maps of 40,000 golf courses around the world; the Fenix 5S and Fenix 5 do not come with these perks. Fenix 5X boasts 12G internal storage built-in, while the other two pack 64MB of internal storage (with only 54MB available for use).

Pre-ordering at IT Show 2017

The Garmin Fenix 5 series smartwatches will only be available by end-March 2017, but they are available for pre-orders if you’re heading down to IT Show 2017 (16th to 19th March 2017). The first 50 pre-orders for the Garmin Fenix 5S and Fenix 5 will get a free QuickFit silicone band (worth S$109).

Updated on 7th August: New colors to suit your taste and fashion

From 26th August, the Garmin Fenix 5S will be available in three more color options - ose Goldtone, Frost Blue and Pink Meringue.

New trendier colour options (left to right): Rose Goldtone, Frost Blue and Pink Meringue

The Frost Blue and Pink Meringue are Southeast Asia exclusive colours, with an updated tone-on-tone pastel palette. Both of these Fenix 5S color options will go for S$999.

The Rose Goldtone option comes with an elegant premium rose gold stainless steel bezel, buttons, rear casing and buckle, paired with a white silicone QuickFit strap. This version will go for S$1,099.
