Despite stiffening competition from other Android vendors, Samsung managed to dominate the global smartphone market.

Based on the latest research from Strategy Analytics, Samsung is still the dominant phone maker as the top three best selling smartphones are Galaxy models. Accounting for 2% of all Android smartphone shipments in the first half of 2016, the Galaxy S7 edge is currently the top-selling Android smartphone. The entry-level Galaxy J2 and the Galaxy S7 are in second and third position respectively.

Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, added, “We estimate the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge model shipped 13.3 million units and accounted for 2 percent share of all Android smartphones shipped worldwide in H1 2016. Samsung’s Galaxy S7 edge is currently the world’s most popular Android smartphone. The S7 edge is wildly popular in dozens of countries globally, due to its attractive curved hardware design blended with a sidebar of apps that consumers find easy to use.”

This is not entirely unexpected as the strong sales of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are credited for helping Samsung achieve its best quarter in two years. However, Strategy Analytics cautions that other players such as Huawei, Oppo and Vivo are catching up fast. With the Galaxy Note 7 hitting retail shelves soon and estimated to ship 12 million units by the end of the year, Samsung should have no problem retaining its throne.
