The Galaxy S10 and foldable phone could save Samsung's struggling mobile business

With the mobile business' operating profit down more than 30% from the previous quarter, Samsung is going through one of the biggest crises in its history and its upcoming phones could be the breakthrough.

Koh Dong-jin, CEO of Samsung's smartphone business reportedly wrote in a corporate message to executives and staff that he felt "sorry about the currently struggling status" of the business and he will do his best to "overcome the crisis with the upcoming Galaxy S10 and foldable phones".

A source told The Korea Herald that Koh's message indicates a critical position for Samsung's mobile business at the moment and the current atmosphere is serious. The South Korean company recently reported more than 30% decline in operating profit for its mobile business in Q3. Another source claimed that the "top-down and rigid decision-making system" poses the most serious issue for Samsung's mobile division as it prevents the company from coming up with innovative ideas and solutions.

However, a senior Samsung official said that Koh's comments were taken out of context and the public should not overanalyze the matter. He added the comments are related to the "different camera features such as the wide-angle function compared to rivals' products", and that Koh will listen to consumers' feedback and reflect them in the product development phase.

Lee Jae-yong, the Vice Chairman of Samsung, is said to have criticized Koh for weakening the competitiveness of Samsung phones after a visit to a shop in Europe. Lee has ordered improvements in the camera technology of Samsung's phones. The upcoming launch of the Galaxy S10 and its first foldable phone in Q1 2019 could be the solution to the crisis the mobile business is facing.
