The Galaxy Note 9 might have something that the iPhone X doesn't

Despite his earlier report of Android phone makers becoming more interested in 3D sensing technology, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 would come with an under-display fingerprint sensor. Apple reportedly cancelled plans to introduce an on-screen Touch ID this year.

Kuo added that there are currently four firms - Synaptics, BeyondEyes, Egis, and Samsung LSI - competing to win the contract from Samsung to supply components that power the under-display fingerprint sensor. BeyondEyes and Samsung LSI have reportedly shipped samples to Samsung for testing, and they are likely to win the contract.

While Samsung and the other Android phone makers race against time to develop 3D-sensing technologies similar to Apple's Face ID, Kuo expects the under-display fingerprint sensor to be used as a stop-gap. Samsung was previously rumored to have encountered technical issues when trying to implement under-display fingerprint sensors on the Galaxy Note8 and Galaxy S8 models.
