Gal Gadot swings from lightning in the new Wonder Woman 1984 trailer

The first trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 has arrived, and it is pure comicbook-y goodness.

The trailer is full of iconic 1980s imagery and music - New Order’s Blue Monday in particular being such an inspired choice. Wonder Woman 1984 is set almost 70 years after the events of the first Wonder Woman film - 70 years after Diana Prince watched Steve Trevor die. Here’s the trailer:

We are also introduced to Kristen Wiig’s Barbara Minerva, who in the comicbooks turns into one of Diana’s most dangerous villains - Cheetah. At this point, she’s a widely known superhero (which makes the events of Batman Vs Superman pretty strange). We see the same stuff we saw in Stranger Things 3 earlier this year - huge malls, successful businesses and Amazons charging the streets. Well, two out of three of those at least.

We see Maxwell Lord as well, played by The Mandalorian himself, Pedro Pascal. Lord seems to be granting wishes with the help of some sort of rock - which might explain Steve Trevor’s sudden reappearance.

Diana also gets some shiny-looking duds towards the end of the trailer, and swings from lightning bolt to lightning bolt with her lasso. That’s comic book campiness at its very best.

Patty Jenkins returns to direct Wonder Woman 1984, with Gal Gadot starring as Diana/Wonder Woman once again. Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen and Robin Wright will return from the first film. Hans Zimmer has also been announced as the movie’s composer (yes!).
