Future Apple Watches to go beyond basic heart rate monitoring?

Beyond its fashion and geeky appeal, Apple might have plans to transform the Apple Watch into a serious medical device.

Sources told Bloomberg that Apple could be equipping future models of the Apple Watch with a built-in EKG feature. One prototype with this advanced heart -monitoring feature being tested requires the user to squeeze the frame of the device with two fingers from the other hand to let an imperceptible current travel across the user's chest to monitor electrical signals in the heart and detect any abnormalities.

The built-in EKG feature would help medical professionals establish the health of the user's heart, and can potentially spot some cardiac problems early. As the development process is ongoing, Apple could decide not to include the technology in the final product.

The Apple Watch already has a capable basic heart rate monitor which is able to detect abnormal heart rate with up to 97% accuracy. Therefore, it's no surprise that Apple is looking beyond basic heart rate monitoring for the Apple Watch. In fact, it was rumored to be introducing interchangeable "smart watch bands" which will usher a "game-changing health feature". The Apple Watch could also be used to measure blood pressure.
