Foxconn is reportedly moving some iPad and MacBook production to Vietnam
Apple is diversifying its production to minimise the impact of the ongoing trade war between U.S and China.
A source with knowledge of the matter told Reuters that Apple supplier Foxconn is shifting some iPad and MacBook production from China to Vietnam. Foxconn is said to be building assembly lines for the iPad and MacBook devices at a plant in Vietnam's Bac Giang province. These assembly lines are expected to be ready in the first half of 2021.
Besides shifting to Vietnam, Reuters reported in July that Foxconn has invested $1 billion in India to make iPhones. The shift of production beyond China is "strongly requested" by Apple. Taiwanese manufacturers have also moved or plan to move some production away from China to other countries such as Mexico.
